Netflix to Produce Marvel TV shows for Alias, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil!

2015, man. The year of the new Star Wars, new Avengers, new Pirates of the Carribean, Ant-man...it was already shaping to be the biggest year in geek history ever. (Or the most disappointing, depending on what happens.) But now Marvel had to go and turn up the game again.

Marvel and Netflix announced today that they had forged a partnership to produce original TV content for the streaming service in 2015. This will take the form of four new miniseries, starring Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist respectively. After those four miniseries have aired (and we've all binge watched them three times), the four heroes will team up in a mini-series called The Defenders.

This is fantastic news for a lot of reasons. First, the Netflix format means we'll be able to binge watch each of these mini series in a weekend when they launch. Second, the Marvel streak of quality (even if you're not the biggest fan of Agents of Shield, it's not a bad show by any stretch) means that these characters will get the treatment they deserve. And finally, given that these are all street level, Hells Kitchen heroes, we're likely to see a darker take than you might have gotten on the big screen.

If this is sucessful, I'd expect to see more street level Marvel heroes get the same treatment. Not to mention the possibilities this opens up - I'm salivating at the thought of a  Netflix adaptation of Runaways.

Check out more details at Netflix's official press site.
