"Ready Player One" Gets Absolutely Perfect Director
If you haven't read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, you're missing one of the greatest stories told in the last decade. Seriously, go read it right now, we'll wait.
Still waiting.
God, how long does it take you to read a book?
Anyway, Cline's fantastic semi-dystopian vision of the future has been optioned into a feature film since pretty much the moment it was published. And while names like Edgar Wright have been bandied about before, Deadline has finally confirmed the choice of director, and it's a doozy.
Steven. Spielberg.
I know, I know, I hear the anti-Spielbergers out there. But Spielberg is the absolutely perfect choice for Ready Player One. The film is steeped in the kind of eighties aesthetic that Spielberg created. As much as the film takes place in a dystopia, it's a hopeful and bright story, and I don't doubt that Spielberg will nail that tone - god knows he's done it before.
The only question remaining is how they'll get around the intense copyright issues the book creates.
