Netflix Developing a Live Action Zelda Series?!

Grains of salt all around, folks, but this one's from a somewhat reputable source. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Netflix is in the early, early days of working on a live action "Zelda" series. Their sources say that they're working closely with Nintendo to develop the show, which they describe as "Game of Thrones for a family audience." While that's a hilarious description if I've ever heard one, in corporate speak it kind of describes the feel of The Legend of Zelda.

The company is still seeking "a writer" (WSJ's words, not mine, I think they might mean "showrunner"), and production is still a long ways off if this one is true. Nintendo has been very hesitant to license their products to American companies after the debacle of Super Mario Bros in the 90s. Still, this would be really exciting if it's true. We know, via Marco Polo, that Netflix has the ability to produce a historical drama with a really high production value, so we can only hope they'd put the same care into a fantasy series like Zelda.

The only question now is if Link will actually speak.

Watch a Man Speedrun Ocarina of Time...Blindfolded

I hope you all kept up with this year's Awesome Games Done Quick. The week-long, 24 hour event brings speedrunners from around the world together to accomplish things that no one's ever done before, for your entertainment and for charity. This year, they raised 1.3 million dollars for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Last night, the second to last stream was one of the most impressive I've ever seen. A runner known as Runnerguy2489 spent an hour and a half running the masterpiece known as The Ocarina of Time...blindfolded. It's insane to watch - Runnerguy knows where he is pretty much at all times, just based on the games music and sound fx, and his own muscle memory. He pulls off tricks that would make most speedrunners tremble, and does it without his eyes. Hit the jump to watch the full run, and be amazed yourself.

We went to HawaiiCon!

It was a delightfully warm and humid day at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.  Birds were chirping, mongooses were causing mischief, and I was absolutely ecstatic to not be the only person walking around in a Star Trek Commander t-shirt.

Phil Plait, who works for Slate magazine now, had worked on building the Hubble Telescope back in the day.

HawaiiCon is a brand new convention which focuses on science and sci-fi.  There were a mix of both lectures from scientists and sci-fi panels starring some of your favorite celebrities.  The convention also managed to organize expeditions outside of the hotel - helicopter tours and scuba dives, for example, which enabled guests to experience the island while still being able to hang out with fellow nerdy con-goers.  There were lots of opportunities for meet-and-greets with celebrities, both for photo ops and on the excursions as well.

And let me tell you: it was awesome.

This post is mostly for photo-dumping.  There were a lot of cosplayers at this convention, which was wonderful!  But unfortunately, we were only there for a day, so we missed out on a lot of awesome cosplays.
