Civil War has Ant-Man, is Basically Avengers 3

Marvel put out a press release today announcing the full cast of Captain America: Civil War...and it is a lot of people. There's a full team of Avengers, plus all of Cap's supporting cast, plus Ant-Man, plus Black Panther, plus Sharon Carter and whoever Martin Freeman is playing. I haven't seen a movie this stuffed that wasn't called "The Avengers" before. And since the storyline of this film involves the Avengers and the consequences of their actions, I'm left to wonder how this is a Captain America movie at all. The good news is, it's Marvel. Renner and Evans call Black Widow a "Slut," and Why That's Not a Joke

The internet is pretty upset today, at two of its heroes, and I think it'd be good to have a brief discussion as to why. As you may have heard, an interview was released this morning with Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner. The interviewer asked a sorta softball question about "shipping," and how the boys felt about Black Widow being paired up with Bruce Banner, instead of either of the two of their characters. Renner responded with a joke, which you can see in the full clip after the jump.

Final All-New, All-Different Avengers Roster Revealed!

We had our own theories, in an article earlier this week, on who might be revealed to be a part of the All-New, All Different Avengers. And it turns out we were...mostly right. (I admit, I was completely off on that Doctor Doom thing, my bad.) Today, thanks to a 4 Chan leak, Marvel released an image of the full new roster of the Avengers, post-Secret Wars. New Avengers Trailer: Hear Quicksilver Speak!

Marvel has released a third - and way more "fun" - trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Mostly designed to introduce you to all of the characters (except Vision), this is a more action packed trailer than we've seen before, and while Tony is still kind of the focus, every character gets a beat, including Quicksilver. Prepare your fangasms, kids. The third trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron is here, and it reveals more of the film than ever before. (So, if you want to go in spoiler free, probably avoid this one.) Heimdall, Peggy Carter and the Falcon confirmed for Age of Ultron

The increasingly tangled web that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe to come appears to be weaving even tighter with the release of the latest poster for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie.
As reported by Comicbook.com. the upcoming Avengers sequel will feature three names well-known to MCU followers but not previously thought to be in the movie: Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, and Idris Elba.

Atwell, of course, is immediately familiar from the fantastic and recently-completed Agent Carter series; though Atwell has made and will make her share of flashback appearances in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming Ant-Man movie, her appearance in the Age of Ultron cast raises the question of whether she will be one more flashback for Cap and the Avengers or, as the article posits, perhaps a confirmation of rumors of time travel.

With the recent news that Spider-Man will now likely be added into the cast of Captain America: Civil War, the likelihood of movies being hastily tweaked and edited as new opportunities become available isn't out of the question -- and the hugely popular Atwell, coming off the acclaim of Agent Carter, could be another such move.

Mackie, on the other hand, comes off his appearance in Winter Soldier as the very-much-modern Falcon, Captain America's close comrade Sam Wilson. Though Mackie wasn't originally slated to appear in Ultron, rumors have him making a brief cameo; Wilson has always been an engaging character, and as the current bearer of Cap's shield in the Marvel Universe on paper, the more we get of him in the MCU, the better.

Idris Elba has previously been seen as Heimdall, guardian of Bifrost, but revealed his appearance in Age of Ultron as recently as a November interview with the Telegraph. Though rumors sometimes have it that Elba seems to depart the MCU, it's hard to imagine the former star of the BBC's Luther doing anything but good when added to a movie. The extent and prominence of his role is still unknown.

Hayley Atwell, Anthony Mackie, and Idris Elba -- it's difficult to imagine what it must be like being a director for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with this kind of talent to pull from at any given crossover moment.

Damned if it isn't fun to watch, though.

Spider-man is Coming Home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

This. Is. Huge.

Marvel has just announced that they have reached a deal with Sony Pictures to include Spider-man in an unspecified upcoming Marvel film. They don't name the film, but the Sony leaks from last year all pointed towards Captain America: Civil War as the film in question. We'll see if they can make a change that large in time..

After Spidey's appearance in the upcoming Marvel film, Sony will release their next Spider-man film on July 28th, 2017. Sony will continue to have financial and the "final creative control" over the Spider-man films. Whether this means they'll allow Marvel to come in and make their films of the quality we've come to expect from the MCU remains to be seen.

Also not known is whether Andrew Garfield will continue on as Spider-man. We'll find out very soon. Fingers crossed that Spidey makes his first cameo sooner than we think.

Marvel and DC Announce Diverse New Comics

Today was a big day for comic books, as massive announcements came from both sides of the Marvel/DC aisle. Marvel made their big announcement that was supposed to appear on The View today (it ended up on their website and mashable instead), and DC announced a whole lineup of new books. The wonderful thing is that a great many of the new books are led by diverse casts - the comic book industry is starting to change. Hit the jump for the full announcements.

Marvel's Movie Schedule through 2019 revealed!

Marvel Studios, the folks behind the monster hits The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, had a special press event today to announce something "secret." Speculation ranged from announcing actors in specific films to announcing their entire slate for the next few years. Well, it turns out...they did all of that.

Marvel needs to stop making Ant-Man. NOW.

When I heard that Marvel wanted to make an Ant-Man movie, I named about twenty other Marvel characters I'd rather see. Characters like Moon Knight, Cloak and Dagger, Iron Fist come to mind. Or, I dunno, any other D-List super hero really. Ant-Man's thing is he gets really really small or really really big. Last time I checked, there weren't a lot of Kaiju in the Marvel universe, but maybe if Bruce Banner got a tick bite or something then he'd be useful.

Then I found out that Edgar Wright was going to be directing it. The guy behind the Cornetto Trilogy and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World? And got Paul Rudd and Michael freaking Douglass to star in it? Ok, Marvel, your ability to get interesting directors and actors has made me want to see the Ant-Man movie and I'm a little pissed that you duped me into it. I don't like being tricked into things, you damn crafty Marvel bastards!

The Avengers should never have worked. By conventional logic, a major summer tentpole movie that requires audiences to have seen at least three other movies is insane. Centering a good chunk of the movie on characters who hadn't been in a film in years (Hulk) or were only bit players in films before (Black Widow) is just as insane. Audiences just aren't that smart, conventional wisdom says. You have to hold their hands at every stage of the game and just hope they can follow even the least convoluted plot line. Movies must be simple.
