Star Wars Reveals Titles, Crew for Two New Movies!

StarWars.com released a ton of new details from a Lucasfilm shareholder meeting, and a lot of it is good! The first piece is a confirmation of something we reported way back when, that Rian Johnson will be writing and directing Episode VIII. This is fantastic news - Johnson's three films have ranged from good (Brothers Bloom) to great (Looper, Brick), and his episodes of Breaking Bad were some of the best in that show's run. We can't wait to see what he does with Star Wars.

The other piece of news concerns the title for Felicity Jones starring Star Wars standalone, directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (About a Boy, Cinderella). The film is entitled "Rogue One," and was developed based on an idea that John Knoll, Chief Creative Officer at ILM, had. If that name doesn't excite you, let me explain why it should: Rogue One is the callsign for the leader of Rogue Squadron, the X-wing pilots that heroically led the charge for the Rebel Alliance and were immortalized in the series of X-wing: Rogue Squadron books. The books are no longer canon, but a film all about X-wing fighters could be amazing. And while she's not confirmed to be playing Rogue One, a film about a female leader of a group of X-wing pilots would be friggin' gold.

Felicity Jones Confirmed for Star Wars Standalone

Whoops, our bad.

After a few days of most of the internet reporting that Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany had been booked for the role, it turns out we were all completely wrong, as Variety is now reporting that Felicity Jones (most recently from The Theory of Everything) has claimed the lead role in Gareth Edwards' Star Wars standalone film.

Original speculation had said that this film would be following a young Han Solo or Boba Fett, but with the hunt for a female lead, the rumor mongers are now saying that this film will be about a young Princess Leia. That would be cool, but honestly I'd prefer it if the films just followed a brand new set of characters.

We'll see for sure when the film releases on December 16, 2016.

Carrie-Anne Moss Joins Marvel/Netflix's AKA Jessica Jones

Marvel has announced another cast member for it's AKA Jessica Jones series, and this time, it's Carrie-Anne Moss. Best known for playing Trinity in the Matrix Series, Moss is a favorite for her appearances in diverse fare like Silent Hill and Memento. She joins David Tennant, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Rachel Taylor as the cast for this new series continues to fill out.

Marvel didn't provide a name or a description for Moss's character, but their head of television, Jeph Loeb, did have the following to say:

“Carrie-Anne has proven her ability to play complex characters with deep and layered inner lives,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “Her interaction with Jessica Jones will be one of the many highlights of the series.”

AKA Jessica Jones will be the second Marvel-produced series to hit Netflix, after Daredevil arrives on April 10th of this year. Netflix will also produce series for Luke Cage and Iron Fist, all leading up to a team up of all four shows in the Defenders mini-series.

Are these your new Ghostbusters?

Lots of interesting casting news and rumors today, huh? The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon are in the final talks to play the leads in Paul Feig's reboot of Ghostbusters. McCarthy and Wiig are both alums of Feig's Bridesmaids, while Jones and McKinnon are current players on SNL, with McKinnon receiving an Emmy nomination for her work on the show. Feig has stated in previous interviews that this is a full reboot of the universe, so don't expect any interactions with the former Ghostbusters cast - which is probably a good thing, all things considered. Better to give these hilarious ladies more time to shine.

David Tennant joins cast of Marvel's new series "A.K.A. Jessica Jones" for Netflix

It's just been announced that David Tennant - yes! The Doctor - will be joining the cast of Marvel's new series for Netflix titled "A.K.A. Jessica Jones."

A former super-hero trying to rebuild her life as a private detective, Jessica Jones keeps getting drawn into cases involving people with unusual abilities. David Tennant is cast as her nemesis Killgrave - a villain from her past, he pops up again to wreak havoc in her new life.

In the comics,  Killgrave was the real name of the Purple Man, a villain with mind control powers who used them to dominate Jessica and make her into his personal slave for months - one of the main reasons she quit being a superhero.

As any fan of David Tennant's incarnation of The Doctor will tell you, he will be able to pull this off with no problem. My prediction is that he will most likely play this as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" thing - we KNOW he's evil, but he's just so damn likable!

Galavant Sings His Way into Our Hearts - For Now

We here at the Ace of Geeks have been looking forward to Galavant ever since the first trailers dropped. What was not to like - a musical comedy, with music by the team behind Tangled (legendary composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater), and a villain played by Timothy Omundson. It seemed like the exact sort of goofy distraction the mid-season break needed. And thank god, it's going to stay as just that.
