The increasingly tangled web that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe to
come appears to be weaving even tighter with the release of the latest
poster for the upcoming
Avengers: Age of Ultron movie.
As reported by
Comicbook.com. the upcoming
Avengers
sequel will feature three names well-known to MCU followers but not
previously thought to be in the movie: Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell,
and Idris Elba.
Atwell, of course, is immediately familiar from the fantastic and recently-completed
Agent Carter series; though Atwell has made and will make her share of flashback appearances in
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming
Ant-Man movie, her appearance in the
Age of Ultron
cast raises the question of whether she will be one more flashback for
Cap and the Avengers or, as the article posits, perhaps a confirmation
of rumors of time travel.
With the recent news that Spider-Man will now likely be added into the cast of
Captain America: Civil War,
the likelihood of movies being hastily tweaked and edited as new
opportunities become available isn't out of the question -- and the
hugely popular Atwell, coming off the acclaim of
Agent Carter, could be another such move.
Mackie, on the other hand, comes off his appearance in
Winter Soldier
as the very-much-modern Falcon, Captain America's close comrade Sam
Wilson. Though Mackie wasn't originally slated to appear in
Ultron,
rumors have him making a brief cameo; Wilson has always been an
engaging character, and as the current bearer of Cap's shield in the
Marvel Universe on paper, the more we get of him in the MCU, the better.
Idris Elba has previously been seen as Heimdall, guardian of Bifrost, but revealed his appearance in
Age of Ultron as recently as a
November interview with the Telegraph. Though rumors sometimes have it that Elba seems to depart the MCU, it's hard to imagine the former star of the BBC's
Luther doing anything but good when added to a movie. The extent and prominence of his role is still unknown.
Hayley
Atwell, Anthony Mackie, and Idris Elba -- it's difficult to imagine
what it must be like being a director for the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
with this kind of talent to pull from at any given crossover moment.
Damned if it isn't fun to watch, though.
