New Mutants Movie Coming!

Before Generation X, or the New X-men, or the All New X-men, there was the original team of kickass teenage mutants. Called simply "The New Mutants," this team was the first group of second generation X-men, and they blazed a trail through the 80s that ultimately ended in them becoming the first X-force. Now, Variety is reporting that Fox has decided to launch the New Mutants to the big screen, with Josh Boone at the helm. Haven't heard of Boone? The biggest film he's known for is teen drama The Fault in Our Stars...which is actually a pretty good pedigree for something like the New Mutants, who were always known for their teenage drama.

First Official Look at X-men: Apocalypse's Jubilee and Jean Grey!

Director Bryan Singer has not exactly been secretive about his upcoming film X-men: Apocalypse. Just like with Days of Future Past, he's decided to take every opportunity to tweet and instagram hints, teases, and outright releases from every aspect of his newest X-film. Today is no different, because today we get our first official look at Jean Grey (Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones) and Jubilee (Lana Condor, who's brand spanking new) in costume on the set. And it's an adorable picture.

Rumor mill: Is there an Agents of SHIELD spinoff coming?

According to Entertainment Weekly, who's usually one of the more reliable sources out there, Marvel and ABC are considering a spinoff to their recently-popular series Agents of Shield, from Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, X-files) and SHIELD writer Paul Zbyszewski, who also worked on Lost and Hawaii 5-0. There's no word yet on what the spinoff might entail, only that it would spin off of "certain ideas and themes" from this season of SHIELD. Rampant speculation is, of course, ill advised, and there's no guarantee this is even happening.

With that out of the way, let's get to rampantly speculating.

The major "theme" of this season, so far, is the introduction of the Inhumans to the MCU. So far, the show has avoided showing any parts of the Inhuman mythology that might show up in an eventual movie, except for brief hints of Attilan, their capital city. They've instead chosen to make these "gifted" individuals more of an analogue to the X-men - something that Marvel has been doing in recent years in order to stave off Fox's stranglehold on the X-men movie and TV rights. So if that's the big theme of this season, and we want to do a spinoff, I'm gonna go ahead and speculate hard that this will be about a team of superpowered individuals. Maybe SHIELD sponsored, maybe rogues - in fact, rogues would be better, as they could then come into conflict with SHIELD on the weekly crossovers.

While I doubt they'd move Skye over to another show permanently, there are a few characters, like Raina and Eyeless-Guy, who would fit perfectly into a demographic like that, and it would satisfy the itch to have an X-men-like show on TV.

Why Marvel isn't Rebooting their Universe.

It's a striking image, to be sure. After weeks and weeks of throwing us bones both exciting (X-men '92!) and confusing (Age of Ultron vs Marvel Zombies? Why?), it seems the endless teasers from Marvel for their Summer 2015 event, almost certainly Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars, have ended. They've ended on the above image, promising that everything will end. Before we get into what it could possible mean, let's talk about what we know.

The Avengers should never have worked. By conventional logic, a major summer tentpole movie that requires audiences to have seen at least three other movies is insane. Centering a good chunk of the movie on characters who hadn't been in a film in years (Hulk) or were only bit players in films before (Black Widow) is just as insane. Audiences just aren't that smart, conventional wisdom says. You have to hold their hands at every stage of the game and just hope they can follow even the least convoluted plot line. Movies must be simple.
